RAME GIG CLUB - CHRISTMAS COFFEE MORNING

KINGSAND INSTITUE

11TH DECEMBER 10 - 12

THANK YOU

16th OCTOBER- 2010 AWARDS NIGHT

Once again, we give thanks to the Cawsand Bay Hotel and all their staff for allowing us to hold our Awards Night there and for the wonderful food provided.  The night was enjoyed by everyone and what a joy to see so many of our Junior Members and their parents in attendance.  It is hoped that over the coming years we will increase our Junior membership and encourage more of them to follow in Sam and Ted's footsteps by rowing for the adult crews.

At Rame everyone's a winner, however, it was a lovely surprise that a local businessman and long time supporter of the Club, Matt  from Plymouth Cycle Scene was so impressed with the achievement of our Crew who conquered the Eddystone Challenge, that he provided individual trophies for each rower in that crew to cherish.

Well done to Hayley Hoskin for winning the ladies Rower of the Year and to Richard Dorrington who won the Mens Rower of the Year.  Several Individual Junior awards were made, but the overriding fact was that every Junior received a medal to show their commitment and achievement over the last year.

Well done to everyone for 2010 and with a new Gig Shed to look forward to, 2011 is set to be a stunning year for us all.

LONDON RIVER RACE 2010

Well done to everyone who took part in this years London River Race.  Two crews taking part, from the Ladies veterans (known this year as Hayleys Comets) and our Mens Veterans crews.

Both crews rowed a valiant race in this charity event.  The ladies were raising funds for Merlin Project, which is a Cornish Charity supporting sufferers of Multiple Sclerosis.  All donations are still being received by the fund raising Representative, Dawn Western.  Our Men were raising funds in aid of another local charity, South West Childrens Hospice.

There was a record amount of Cornish Pilot Gigs in this years event, raising from the usual 22, up to 37.

Our Men, rowing in Minnadhu finished 5th in the Gig Section, and 32nd Overall in a time of 2hrs 35. This is an improvement on 1 minute on their last years time.

Ladies rowing in Penlee Point finished 20th in the Gig Section, and 131st overall in a time of 2hrs 54min's, an improvement on  last years Penlee time of 5 minutes.

Well done to everyone who took part in this event.  The total money raised for charity is not yet known but will be posted asap.

ST IVES 12/09/10

It was the last Regatta of the season, who could have believed that we would have such glorious weather well into September.  With the blessed weather came blessed results.  Rame Ladies loaned one of its rowers to Mounts Bay, Thanks no doubt to that rower, Mounts Bay won the race.  Well done Dawn. With a 2nd place in the B's and winning the ladies Veterans, it has been a class Regatta to attend.  Welll done to you all, both spectators and rowers alike.  Roll on London.!

NEWQUAY LADIES CHAMPIONSHIPS 04/09/10

Two ladies crews attended this years championships in Newquay with great results.  for some of our rowers it was their first experience of this championship and were blessed with good weather for the ocassion.  The draw for our B crew was not so kind.  Rowing against 5 other top A crews proved a tough challenge.  Our Ladies A crew rowed a valiant race finishing in 3rd place in their heat qualifying them for the next round.  It is the first time in 3 years our ladies have qualified for the 2nd round which has been a marvellous achievement.

The overall positions for our ladies in the championship were 32nd for the A crew and 55th for the B's in a field of 71 crews.  Well done ladies

EDDYSTONE CHALLENGE 2010

A brave, foolhardy crew set out on the challenge not really knowing what lay ahead!

28 miles!! thats not far, some would say... Others voiced comments like, "you must be barking" and  "you will never make it!" Well.... make it we did!  4 ladies and men, rowed to the Eddystone Lighthouse in only 2hrs 12 minutes.  (rowing back would prove to be more challenging!) Feeling very pleased with themselves and in fine spirits.  Even managing several outburst of song along the way.  Unfortunately, the sounds of Rame rowers singing while they row, served purpose to spur on the opposition, they rowed faster to escape the magical harmonious tones coming from the Penlee Point.  Once we realised this flaw in our plan, the singing subsided.... It had nothing to do with the fact tiredness and fatigue was setting in.  At around the 4hour mark, we were approximately 8 miles from home.. not bad going.. however Mother Nature had other ideas.  The Rain came down in bullet sized drops and the wind picked up dampening spirits and blowing Penlee Point a little off course.  As one rain storm stopped another started, causing some concern when this was followed by sounds of rumbling thunder almost on top of us.  Ummm  .. 8 soaking wet rowers in a very wet Gig, in the middle of the Channel, and a thunderstorm pending!! not the ideal spot to be in.. Thankfully, lightening didn't strike.  With 2 injured rowers, the last 8 miles seemed to go on forever, Rachel Peters never missing an opportunity to lift our hearts with another song..Rain drops keep falling on my head, and show me the way to go home..   Thanks Rachel, you kept us going when we were all feeling pretty down. The sight of Rame Head lightened all our spirits.. Not long to go.  A little maneuvering around a fishing trawler, and we would soon be heading our way towards the breakwater.

Mission accomplished in 5hours 40min's.  5 Gigs taking part in the challenge and Rame finished in a very respectable 3rd place.

Well done to Hayley Hoskin, Rachel Peters,Trace Morcombe, Gill Gibson,  John Peters, Carl Barnicot, Richard Dorrington and John Gibson.  Who all say, never again!!

Until next year maybe!!

RAME REGATTA 2010

Its hard to believe that after all the hard work, organising, meetings, blood sweat and tears, our regatta arrived. With military precision our many supporters organised superbly the delicate task of ensuring the safe entry and exit of Gigs and trailers onto Cawsand Square. further helped by the team of muscle to get the Gigs onto the beach.  And how lucky are we with the weather! It remained in our favour, perfect conditions to row in, albeit a bit sticky.

Thanks to all attending clubs for arriving in ample time and again, for ensuring all Gigs were on the water prompt for each race.  It is outstanding that we managed to get through 10 races, some with 3 heats, and all completed before 6pm.  The overall winning positions still to be announced by the CPGA.

Sincere thanks must go to everyone who helped, from the loan of fields for car and trailer parking, muscle on the day, all who made cakes, sanis flans etc, those who donated prizes for the raffle,  the BBQ,  refreshments,  bar suppliers and staff all who donate a lot of time and effort. Thanks also to marshalls, car park attendants, bus drivers,  our comentator, official scoreboard writer, St Johns Ambulance, cleaners, (not the nicest job but well done to clear the blockage so quickly!!)  All umpires, starters, safety boats, photographers, Rame Male voice choir, Band and  Fireworks (which I thought were particularly spectacular this year! or am I just a bit biased), Monster energy drink company, The campsite at Maker.  Not fogetting the wonderful job the officials from the CPGA, who take responsibility for the Tribute event races.  I'm sure someone will have been forgotton, although not intentially, but for those, we also thank you.

Of course, not least, thanks to everyone who turned up to row, and those of you who support both your clubs and our Regatta.  The party was again, amazing.  With only a couple of adjustments noted for next year, hopefully, we got it just about right.

Well done everyone and thank you.

TRIBUTE SERIES

This is a set of three events for Cornish Pilot Gig rowing, which determines a clubs position in the league table for which we all aspire to improve our positions year on year.  Rame have struggled in recent years, due to introducing new rowers, accompanied with various shifts and family committments.  This year hopefully sees the turn of the tide, with our ladies moving up the table significantly.  With a long way still to go, we improved our position from 28th last year to 16th this year.  A very well done to all trainers, coxwains, rowers and supporters.  The rest of this year and beginning of next season, we will try to improve on this further and hopefully, our men and junior crews will see similar improvements on their results.

BANDITS, BRIGANDS AND BUCCANEERS MAY BANK HOLIDAY...

Piracy, Extortion, Militia corruption, Midnight raids, Giant lobster attacks, A pirate ship, a fort, underground tunnels, Toll gates, Fantastic costumes, Robbery, Buckling of the swash, the smell of black powder, cannon, and a fantastic time….." What has all this got to do with Rame Gig Club!! we are a Cornish Pilot Gig Rowing Club!.. We were approached and asked to help out at Mount Edgcumbe as a local Gig Club, to row around the Pirate Ship dressed as Marine Militia to add a little authenticity to the  Bank Holiday Proceedings.  15 of our unsuspecting members volunteered to help out over the 3 day event and were plummeted into a vigourous training scedule of marching, weaponry, combat trainining after,  of course swearing alegence to King George..."husssar"!!! Not a great deal of Gig Rowing, as King George's Marines had other plans afoot.  As Militia, our role was to assist the Town Treasury and Magistrates in Tax and Toll collection, seizure of contraband, arrest and bring to justice outlaws. Also to protect the white wigs and Red and Blue Coats.

Taverns complete with serving wenches and dancing, Casino with croupiers and "good luck girls" that cannot be trusted.
a Liquor Store selling all styles of contraband and moonshine.
a Gun Shop with deliveries that can be robbed of basic weapons and ammunition, Town Treasury, Bank which would be attacked for its bullion, 3 Town Gates, Jail, and Court ......

But seriously folks!! take a look at the pictures for yourself, we clearly hated every minute of it!!! not really!!  If we ever get fed up with Rowing, there may be an opening in reenactment for us..

LONGPOOL REPAIRS 08/05/2010

Some of you may have noticed that the Pool at Kingsand known as Longpool has now been repaired thanks to a team of hard working Vets and Supervets.  Having raised funds at a local Coffee morning, work began after the Veteran rowers had completed their training session in the Gig.  In cold and windy conditions, there followed hours of rock shifting and water pumping, re erecting of the stonework and on refilling the pool it was restored to its former glory.  A seating area is also planned in keeping with the original facility that will be remembered by only a few of the elders of our community.  Thanks to this hard work, within days of the completion, children could be seen playing safely in the pool and snorkelling.  A true community benefit.  Our thanks to those who helped on this cold May Weekend.

SCILLIES 2010

Well Done Falmouth Ladies and Parr Men, This years World Champions!!  Fabulous result for all involved in this weekends Championships
RAME!! what a wonderful time we all had.  With 2 ladies crews, 2 mens crews, 1 Mens Vets, 1 Mens Supervets and 1 ladies Vets Crews, this has been the best attendance for our club.  as well as great group of supporters.  Our results improved massively on last years positions.  And yes, the vets still beat the blind crew!.. In order of Races, Friday being the first, our Ladies Vets came 20th in a field of 46 Gigs.  Men Vets came 21st and Supervets 35th in a field of 62 Gigs.  On to Saturday with a field of 127 Gigs attending, the beach was a hive of activity in preparation for the first race of the day.  With ladies all lined up and tensions high, the time had come to test out our training efforts.  Our ladies for the first time in many years, had two full crews who had trained hard for 4 months prior to this race.  The decision was made prior to this weekend that we did not have an A and a B crew as we were so closely matched!! but who could have predicted such a close call!! No one could have predicted with so many Gigs in one race, over a distance of 3000mtrs, that it would be a battle for positions between Penlee Point and Minnadhu .  This continued throughout the competition giving a spectacular photo finish in the final between ourselves, with Minnadhu gaining a mere one place over Penlee Point.  53rd and 54th place.

Our men also were blessed with two full crews and despite a challenging training regime, made improvements on last years positions.  Not without a little drama , our overall positions were 52nd and 64th.  Our men were stars throughout the entire weekend, supporting the ladies at every opportunity, helping to get boats on and off the water and moving kit around to where it was needed.  Having support and enthusiasm from all members giving encouragement when needed congratulating when deserved, is very refreshing and our club has every right to be extremely proud of all its members.

It can be said with total confidence, that we are moving onwards and upwards.  With the current attitudes and approach, we can be assured that we will progress and achieve improvements year on year.

Well done to everyone.

MEMBERSHIP MONEY IS DUE...

The Committee has appointed a new Membership Secretary, following the resignation of Helen Nance.  Our thanks go to Helen for her efforts in the past and our thanks also to Dennis  Hutchins for volunteering to take the job on from Helen.  Dennis will be chasing anyone who is behind or has not paid their membership money to the club.  Please help to make his job easier by ensuring we all pay on time.

Please be reminded that all memberships must be paid before you go to the Scillies Championships.  If they are not paid in full, you must complete the membership form with your declaration to pay in 3 instalments, payable April, May and June.  From now, you are not insured to get in a Gig if you have not completed the declaration and made payment.  The club has a legal obligation and a duty of care for its members and therefore we must comply with the insurance requirements.  YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO ROW IN SCILLIES WITHOUT FIRST PAYING YOUR MEMBERSHIP.

THANK YOU.

VOLUNTEER REQUESTED TO ASSIST HAYLEY

Rame Gig Club is committed to the Learn to Row Scheme in partnership with Torpoint Community College.  The requirement is for the Club to assist Torpoint School in training 12 students each year in indoor rowing and Gig Rowing.  Hayley has volunteered to train as a level 2 coach and will be at the head of this project.  She will also be training as an indoor instructor for the dry rowing course.  We have assisted funding for a further indoor coache and would like to involve some of our younger rowers to assist in the project.  If there are any of the younger men or ladies who would like to be involved and would be available to commit themselves to an afterschool club to be held both at Torpoint School and Cawsand Beach under the guidance of Hayley...(dates to be confirmed), please let Gill Gibson or Hayley Hoskin know before the 15th April 2010.  It would be wonderful to have one of our men come into the frame for this prestigious opportunity.  It is hoped that if the scheme is successful, it may benefit both the youth of the area and the Club itself, as potentially, we will be introducing new rowers between the age of 14 and 19 to the sport, on an annual basis. Please give Hayley your support.

Thank you.

DARTMOUTH REGATTA 03/04/10

The first and last Regatta prior to the Scillies Championship.  This day is used  to set our benchmark for how much more work is needed by the rowers.  With luck on our side insofar as the weather, nobody got wet and in fact a few of us got a little bit of colour to our cheeks.

A very well run event with most races getting off on time  although almost every crew for one reason or another received time penalties at the descretion of the "starter" for reason's no-one could really make out.

Rame ladies enter an A and B crew as well as introducing a novice, younger crew into the C race. Also present were mens and ladies veteran crews.  Unfortunately, once again, we did not have any men to enter any of the mens racing.  Rather than let Penlee Point sit idle, she was loaned to Caradon's B crew enabling them to double up their racing and giving us the pleasure of seeing our much beloved Penlee Point finish in a few winning positions... Hopefully, one day it will be a Rame crew rowing her into that position!! 13 crews racing in the ladies A, was a battle from start to finish... Several clashing, a few oars hitting our rowers heads and a very very tight squeeze with gigs either side battling for water... Our crew rowed on valiantly finishing in 9th position.. A marked improvement on last years race.

The B crew had a slightly better race, despite a 10 second penalty imposed, they fought through the race finishing strong in 6th position only very slightly behind Caradon ladies B crew.  This was later moved to 5th as Caradon ladies received a disqualification.

Our ladies C crew, built of our younger members and  largly novice rowers had the row of their lives.  Watched with amazement by the spectating members of the club as they battled with Volante for 1st place... Volante had the edge but it took them until the final 100 meters to beat Rame...  This time, Volante won and Rame ladies C came 2nd.  Watch out, these ladies have the winning line in their sights and will be trying again to get there... Well done.

Both Veterans crew came 8th respectively.  Once again,  very good result for all competing crews.

THREE RIVERS RACE - 07/03/10

Rame turned out 9 ladies to row in the Three Rivers Race at Saltash and were very grateful to Weymouth for the loan of Lynn, Kate and Karen to make up our 2nd Crew.  With a biting wind, we were all feeling the cold as we prepared for the start.  Our thanks must go out to Caradon Gig Club for their organization and commitment.  We were delighted to turn up early expecting to launch our gigs, only to find them already launched and tied off the pontoon.  Thank you so much Caradon.  We also give thanks to Chris Parsonage for turning out to support our ladies and assist in recovering the Gigs after the race.  It was a great sight to see him on the slip with the trailer to hand, followed shortly afterwards by further supporters, John and Irene Lentell.  Many thanks also to Matt for towing our Gig to Saltash the night before.  Without our supporters, we could not have rowed today.

The race itself, was not without its troubles.  Minnadhu had berth 1 on the Devon side and were unfortunate to be involved with not just 1, but 3 clashing incidents with the same Gig !! We will mention no names, but needless to say, their Coxwain apologised the first time, after that , his crew were looking extremely embarresed. Despite this, our Crew battled on to overtake 3 Gigs and finish the race with a bit of a kick. Getting an overall position of 21st in 60min 28sec's. Penlee Point, made up of 50% Rame and 50% Weymouth, had a valiant race They too had a bad start, but picked up the pace and overtook 4 Gigs to finish in 34th position in 68min 28sec's.  Jo Halliday was a last minute replacement to the Crew, having never raced the 3 rivers before,  still very much a novice, but she showed her strength and battled to the end. There was a total of 38 Gigs, in the ladies race, with Caradon in Essa, winning in 50 min 25sec's showing the difficult waters everyone had to row in.  Well done to everyone including our Cox'ns who shouted themselves hoarse keeping the rowers going.  Looking forward to Round Looe Island in 3 weeks time, where we hope to have 4 crews racing.

ALL MEMBERS

There is still repairs and maintenance needed on our Gigs.  Barnie and a small group of members have been putting in long hours giving up all spare time available to work on these repairs to enable us to have the boats on the water to train in at the earliest possible time.  Please.. anyone with spare time on Fridays, Saturdays and/or Sundays, please assist at the Gig Shed.  There are bottom boards and paddles to rub down prior to painting along with some more technical work to be done with consultation with Barnie and Tony.

Thanks you.
