3/09/2011 - LADIES NEWQUAY CAMPIONSHIPS Well done to everyone who turned up to row today. Another great chance for all us ladies to get together and row, chat and enjoy ourselves. Unfortunately, a few of us were rather under the weather, but not wanting to let their crew down, despite feeling dreadful, rowed regardless. a special thank you to those. Rame once again, rowed their hearts out. It was an unfortunate start for our B crew, with a few mishaps along the way, but not getting downhearted, they carried on regardless to the end encouraging each other along the way. Good effort ladies. Our A crew had a much better start, and showed everyone what Rame really can do, Coming 5th in their heat, but with a time to be proud of, missing out on qualifying for the second round by seconds. ( It is unclear how the final qualifying results were calculated, as, 16 fasted times were due to go through, the last heat rowed today was a shortened course due to the failing weather, and a few crews still need to row) Newquay championships has been hampered by the weather, with chop stopping rowing, harbour becoming a danger to returning Gigs and some even being assisted by the lifeboat. The last two heats in the first round have to return on Sunday for their first row! Juniors racing for tomorrow has been postponed until the mens championship weekend. Despite all, we enjoyed our rowing, and in true lady fashion, we came away with shopping bags and new tshirts! Never a missed opportunity to get in a bit of retail therapy! Next weekend is possibly the last regatta of the season, so come on all. put your names down and lets get off to Mounts Bay where hopefully the sun will shine. |
22/08/2011 - PLYMOUTH ALBION -V- RAME GIG CLUB No, not on the pitch as Albion usually prefer... but at Cawsand Beach with a new challenge and team building excersise... Plymouth Albion players tackle the Paddle and Gig, in their attempt to master the art of Cornish Pilot Gig Rowing. They do say the sun shines on the righteous, and it certainly came out today. With a misty cold start to the day, by the time the Albion players had arrived and finished lunch, the sun was out in abundance. Approximately 30 team players took part each with different abilities in the rowing game but all enjoying the challenge using all three of Rame's Gigs. Most participated in 2 rows each the second one being a short race against each other. Many of these fine young men with their tops off gave the ladies on Cawsand beach a real treat. Well done to all Plymouth Albion as well as the Rame Gig Club Volunteers who gave up their day off to assist in this event. |
RAME REGATTA - 24/07/11Once again our Regatta has been an event to remember for all the right reasons. With military precision our many supporters organised superbly the delicate task of ensuring the safe entry and exit of Gigs and trailers onto Cawsand Square. further helped by the team of muscle to get the Gigs onto the beach. And how lucky are we with the weather! It remained in our favour, perfect conditions to row in. Thanks to all attending clubs for arriving in ample time and again, for ensuring all Gigs were on the water prompt for each race. Sincere thanks must go to everyone who helped, from the loan of fields for car and trailer parking, muscle on the day, all who made cakes, sanis flans etc, those who donated prizes for the raffle, the BBQ, refreshments, bar suppliers and staff all who donate a lot of time and effort. Thanks also to marshalls, car park attendants, bus drivers, our comentator, official scoreboard writer, St Johns Ambulance, cleaners, (not the nicest job but well done to clear the blockage so quickly!!) All umpires, starters, safety boats, photographers, Rame Male voice choir, Band and Fireworks. The campsite at Maker. Not fogetting the wonderful job the officials from the CPGA, who take responsibility for the Tribute event races. I'm sure someone will have been forgotton, although not intentially, but for those, we also thank you. Of course, not least, thanks to everyone who turned up to row, and those of you who support both your clubs and our Regatta. The party in our new Gig Clubhouse was again, amazing. Evolving year on year with more rowers staying to celebrate the end of the Tribute event. Well done everyone, thank you, and see you all next year.

CARADON MIXED CHAMPIONSHIPS - 09/07/11 Well done to everyone who rowed today in the mixed championships. You could be forgiven if you thought today was the Vets Championships, as we were honoured to have 6 supervets and 3 vets out of a total of 13 rowers that were used today. Rame exceeded all expectations and have proved once again that the training sessions in our new fitness suite along with the efforts of our 2 coaches in the Gig training sessions are paying dividens. Those rowers that have been to regattas are improving with every race. Today, our B's with one vet and 5 supervets rowing, made it to the semi finals in the plate race. An outstanding result. While our A crew went on to win. Well done to Aaron, Charlotte, Richard, Steve, Samantha and Hayley. It was unfortunate that the winners of the plate race did not receive either a medal or a trophy to celebrate their success. Hey ho.... we still won. More photo's of the day are on the gallery page. The club's commiserations to all the vets and supervets, who not only rowed 3 - 4 races today, but go out tomorrow to race a further 3 - 4 or more races to represent the club . VETS/SUPERVETS CHAMPIONSHIP - SUNDAY 10/07/11 and so, onto the next day of the championships, for the Vets and Supervets. With an ever increasing age in our crews, competing with Vets crews 26 years their junior.. Rame Gig Club did increadibly well. With 2 Supervet rowers in the mens crew closer to 70 than 60 and most others closer to 60 than 50, it has to be said.. well done. We had ladies vets, mens vets, mens supervets and a mixed supervets crew competing in this competition. Our Mens and ladies reaching the 1/4 final of the plate competition, and the Supervets and Mixed Supervets finishing 3rd and 4th in their round, everyone put so much effort into their rowing, no more could have been asked. With 9 of the rowers having already rowed 3 or 4 races the day before making todays achievements even more spectacular. A large amount of the crews, despite their racing day being over, stayed to cheer on other clubs and enjoy the camaradory of the club. With a great game of cricket and megga stunts from first, Hayley, then Don.. in an attempt to rescue the ball from the river.. this was topped by Jacks attempt to assist Don by wadding up to his armpits in hilarious fashion. Caught on camera, I must work out how to get this piece of video footage onto Youtube or at least this website for you all to enjoy! Well done to everyone who competed and especially once again to our star mascots, Hannah and Robert. Cheering the crews and encouraging everyone to take part in a game of cricket. Well behaved as always. |

Porthlevan and St Ives Rame enjoyed two wonderful and sunny weekend at both these Regattas great results at both especially St Ives with 2nd, 3rd and 4th placings, well done to everyone who rowed. Both ladies and mens crews were represented. Rame Gig Club was very sad that they were unable to attend Weymouth Regatta, due to illness, and a lack of a vehicle. With other venues having been cancelled due to poor weather conditions, it is all fingers crossed that we have good fortunes at our own venue on 23rd July. Prior to that though, we are all looking forward to Saltash Mixed and Vets Championships, as well as the Tribute Regatta at Paignton. |

FITNESS SUITE SUCCESS It is a pleasure to report that the new Fitness Suite has proved to be a great success. We are gaining memberships each week and everyone back a similar message, how great it is to have such a facility on the door step, and what a view from the window. Rame Gig Club is very proud of this and aims to build on our success with the help of both rowing and fitness suite members. |

ROSELAND - 2ND JUNE 2011 Wow, how different two weekends could be! from the stormy wet and miserable event at Looe to the scorching sun, fun on the beach and wonderful racing a total contrast in weather which made us all realise why we row Gigs, you have to have the bad weather event to appreciate the good. Well done to Roseland for a very well run event, with racing getting off smoothly and a good team of officials readily available to help us all. As for the racing, Rame had limited numbers of men available for this Regatta, however, the 6 veterans (4 of which were supervet's) did a fantastic job rowing back to back mens A and B, coming 16th in the A race using it as a warm up, finishing in 15.10, going straight into the B's finishing in 15.03 putting them in 12th position. Two of our men then went on to row a third race with 4 female veterans at the end of a tiring day, and managed to pull an amazing race, finishing ahead of burley all mens crews, into 5th position. Our Ladies had an amazing regatta, Ladies A rowed in the 2nd heat finishing 3rd in the heat in a time of 16.26. the overal position for the A's was 11th. Our ladies B crew watching this wonderful achievement decided it was their own personal challange to beat that position, and promised themselves they would go all out to come 2nd in their heat... and yes.. they did it, the B's rowed also in the 2nd heat of their race, and finished in 2nd position with a time of 16.51. This put them in an overall fabulous position of 6th place. A very well done to everyone who took part as well as the 2 coxwains who between them spent the entire day on the water, swopping from rowing a race to coxing the next.. Great results. Keep up the good work, the training is obviously working . Well done again.. |

LOOE TRIBUTE REGATTA The first of the Tribute events did not get off to a great start. With poor weather conditions and unfortunate location, making the limited facilities a challenge for everyone. It is the first year that Looe have attempted a Tribute event, which no doubt will evolve and improve in time. Rowers all rose to the challenge to make the most of the racing with crews in both Mens and Ladies A and B as well as Veterans. We have 5 Tribute events to attend in total where the best 3 out of the 5 will be used in the final results. The Tribute results for the main categories were:- Mens A 29th (19.33), Mens B 10th (18.35) Ladies A 26th (21.01), Ladies B 16th (22.13) Well done to everyone who competed. |

SCILLIES 2011 Rame has had a challenging year with the rebuilding of our Gig Shed causing disruption in the training . Despite this, our rowers have maintained a good level of fitness with training on the water complimenting individual efforts. We attended the World Championships with a ladies A, B and Vets crew. Mens Vets and Supervets, which doubled up as our Mens A and B with Aaron Barnicott as their secret weapon in the Mens A's. Despite being short on younger rowers, the men rowed into 52nd place and 117th. The Vets came a very proud 26th and Supervets 48th. |

Our Ladies this year introduced Circuit training into their program which has assisted greatly their fitness levels and stamina. They did themselves proud. The ladies vets crew finished in the same position as the men - 27th. The A crew maintained a healthy 55th position in a field of 124 putting them well in the top half. Our B crew with 3 novice to scillies rowers, having battled in their heats, pulled out all the stops to bring home a trophy having won their overall heat in the final. A very proud moment for those rowers standing on the podium. |
| The entire weekend is one to be proud of. All rowers and spectators pulled together and helped each other throughout. With the poor weather conditions on Monday, it was high drama when the Scillonian had to be cancelled. Our rowers let out a great cheer when they realised they had an extra night on the islands. A great time was had by all once again, Well done to everyone. | |

9TH APRIL 2011 - OPENING CEREMONY They say the sun shines on the rightous. Well, the sun was out today, and the crowds turned up to support us along with Calstock Gig Club. So many supporters and wellwishers, too numerous to mention all by name, but what a wonderful day everyone had. Partying into the evening, with live music and good company, we certainly had an opening to be proud of. Photo's of the day can be found in the gallery. |

PRESS RELEASE Rame Gig Club is delighted to announce the completion of their newly converted and refurbished boat house. The work has been long awaited and is part of an ambitious £200,000 development to increase and improve the storage area for the three Gigs, Spirit of Rame, Minnadhu and Penlee Point, as well as provide toilet and kitchen facilities to the ground floor. The development boasts a new 1st floor training room which can also be used as a meeting facility. The training room is to be named the Tony Jago Fitness Suite, in memory of one of the clubs original founders and constant fund raiser, who sadly passed away recently. The new facility will provide a training area for the entire local community. Over the last 5 years the Club has worked hard to promote the concept, develop the design, gain planning permission and secure sufficient funding to be able to award the development contract. The Boat House and Fitness Suite are based in Cawsand Square with balcony views over Cawsand Bay. The venue is the base for the Rame Gig Club who train and race Cornish Pilot Gigs most evenings and weekends, racing in local Regatta's and attending the annual World Championships for Cornish Pilot Gigs held in Scillies each May. The intention is to expand in numbers and offer a wider choice to include indoor rowing hopefully to competition standard, and to increase the partnership with the local Schools in encouraging more youth to participate in the sport. We have been extremely fortunate and proud to secure grant funding to allow this development to become a reality from Viridor Credits, East Cornwall Local Action Group, SITA Cornwall Trust, British Rowing, Sport England, Lottery-Awards for All, Torpoint Lions and with Maker Rame Parish Council. It is imperative that we also give thanks to our members in their fundraising efforts as well as the numerous members with trades that have freely donated time and skills. Our thanks also to the numerous and generous donations received from so many within the community. This facility could not have been achieved without their continuous support. Don Seymour Chairman of Rame Gig Club , is delighted: Gill Gibson Vice Chair, said: There is to be an official open day on 9th April to which everyone is invited. 3 RIVERS RACE - 13TH MARCH The first race of the season saw the sun high in the sky and a record amount of crews at Saltash. Rame entered a ladies and a mens crew. As always, this is a very difficult race so early in the season, and served as a benchmark to monitor how much training has been done and how much needs to be done by so many crews across the Gig world prior to the Championships on St Marys in 6 weeks time. Our crews raced well and finished a respectable 29th for the ladies and 30th for the men. Well done to Laura and Pearl who rowed this race for the first time. Well done also goes to John and Aaron who also tackled the race for the first time. The men were joined by Rachel without who they would not have been able to partake. Well Done everyone. |

15th FEBRUARY Richard and Gill attended Torpoint School today, along with our 6 concept rowing machines to introduce students to indoor rowing. A competition was conducted with British Rowing, Torpoint School and Rame Gig Club, with the Callington School Sports Partnership Scheme. We saw around 200 students compete with increadible determination and effort. It was amazing to see even the smallest of pupils, who had never attempted such an event, put so much enthusiasm and drive into the day. It was an amazing success which highlighted many potential rowers to go forward to the next stage of the British Indoor Rowing Championships, but also as an introduction into Gig Rowing. Rame will be running a course with Torpoint School called the Learn to Row Scheme. Rame will also be running promotion days for anyone to come along and give rowing a go, before hopefully joining as a member. All ages are welcome and weather permitting, our first such day will be 19th March between 11am and 2pm. |

FEBRUARY 2011 It must be said, that I am very proud to be the Vice Chair of Rame Gig Club, especially when seeing so many members training hard so early in the season. Sometimes non rowers, locals, supporters are so often blissfully unaware of the efforts and rigourous training regime that our rowers undertake. I hear so many times, comments of how good our clubs rowers used to be!!! How our rowers would always win all their competitions, and how sad it is that we are not as good now!! That is not true.... Yes, Rame was at the top of its game 15 years ago, winning races and making the local community proud. However.... Gig rowing is a completely different sport now compared to 5 years ago let alone 15 or 20 years ago. The competition has increased as has the number of clubs. Scillies alone has increased from 20 competing crews to 145. If you look out to Cawsand Bay and dont see one of our Gigs on the water, this does not mean our crews are not training...No longer can a group of fishermen turn up and row a successful race. To be at the top of the tree in this sport today, requires olympic athlete style training. Winning crews can train up to 9 time per week every week. With the pressures and committments of modern day life, most clubs expect 2 - 3 sessions per week. Our rowers do themselves proud in training a minimum of 4 times a week increasing to up to 6 sessions, a mixture of gym, circuit and water training. On top of racing and training, we have contributed in various fundraising rows to help charities such as Breast Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis and Childrens Hospice. All this needs to be celebrated SO PLEASE...instead of the constant reminders of how much better our predecessors were, can we concentrate on giving our rowers encouragement and praise where it is due. We all know we have some shortcomings, but we do this because we enjoy it, and should not have to keep battling with the memories of the past. This club can not move forward all the time we keep looking back, except to celebrate in the continuation of the club and the hope that the future members can respect the efforts of our predecesors. All that is left for me to say as the Vice Chair.... Rowers, I, and the committee are proud of you and wish you success in your training and racing efforts in the coming year.

JANUARY 2011 At the AGM of the Cornish Pilot Gig Association, Rame Gig Club was presented with the Lizzy Pyne Memorial Trophy. This is an award presented annually, based on a number of criteria, including, best cared for Gigs, helpfullness and willingness to lend boats. We are very proud to have won this award which was last awarded to Rame in 2001. Our Gigs went through much needed maintenance work last year carried out by Carl Barnicott and Tony Jago, with help from a number of our members. Tony Jago was always a prominent figure within the CPGA as well as our own club. He would have been very proud to have received this award. We accept the trophy in his memory. |
