Twas the day before, the day before Christmas, and nothing stirred.  All was well, calm and silent!!!

All that was except for the mad 7 who decided it would be a good idea to go for a row in the early hours!! at 10am, 6 ladies (including 4 veterans and 1 child) and a mad man, launched the boat onto the beach.  At first, all looked doom and gloom as on approaching the beach, someone who can not be named! decided the slip was a good place to park his vehicle while he went fishing!!  After much debate, and dissappointment, the car was eventually moved and our motly crew braved the water, with icicles hanging around their faces, and fingers cold enough to snap, they continued with their quest.  It was not long before they had warmed up and stripped down to the summer training gear, while rowing out to Fort Picklecombe and back.  With the sun breaking through the clouds and the breakwater in sight, it was the most perfect day for a recreational row very much enjoyed by those involved and to the amusement of those who     watched from the beach.

Rame Gig Club is proud to have attracted two new rowers from overseas... Gregor from Austria and Mateus from France.
They have joined us this year as they have been working and living in the community as part of Point Europa.  Both individuals as well as Rame Gig Club are keen for them to be a part of our crews when we attend the World Championships on Isles of Scilly in 2008. They are very keen to take home some new experiences and have been a refreshing addition to our novice crews.  There have been additional youngsters attend to try out the sport from time to time.  We hope the connections with Point Europa will attract further newcomers to the sport in the years to come.

Mens   A  came 18th (out of 103) Ladies A  26th (out of 95) Both B crews came mid field.  Also entered both men and ladies Veterans  crew which came respectfully mid field in their races

ALL SMILES : Vehicle loan saves Rame rowers’ charity race bid

ARTICLE AS PER CORNISH TIMES 14.08.07
Rame’s veteran female rowers salute their night in shining armour who stepped in to help them take part in a charity race. Rame Gig Club’s female veterans were finalising their plans to row in the 22-mile Great London River Race on September 8, with the aim of raising money for Breast Cancer Care. But then they realised that there were no members who had a vehicle large enough with a tow bar that could pull their vessel to the capital.

However; local hotelier and Formula One Powerboat magnate Chris Parsonage averted the crisis when he agreed to lend the club his own vehicle. Gill Gibson, the club’s vice-chairman, who will be taking part in the race, said “we had done a fair amount of planning and we were all looking forward to going to London. Then we realised that there was no one who had a vehicle that could help. After much searching we decided to ask Chris Parsonage, who owns the Cawsand Bay hotel – next door to our club. His PA rang back, telling us he would be delighted to help us. We are extremely grateful to him”. The mens team from the club will also be taking part in the event which runs from Ham, Richmond, dow the Thames to Island Gardens, Greenwich. The race will see more than 250 boats compete across 35 different classes.

SUCCESS:
Rame Gig Club Ladies and Mens Veteran Rowers succeed in style.
EXTRACTS FROM ARTICLE AS PER CORNISH GUARDIAN 12.09.07

It isn’t every day that you see a Cornish Gig Crew rowing past Big Ben and under Tower Bridge. Rame Men and Ladies Veterans competed in London’s 20th annual Great River Race along the Thames. The gruelling 22-mile event attracted hundreds of crews from across the country.

Rame Crews performed more than admirably. Rame Men battled out their race against Boscastle and Local Crew Jupiter Point,  , finishing seconds behind Boscastle and ahead of Jupiter. The mens crew were raising funds for South West Childrens Hospice

Rame Ladies came second in their Minnadhu vessel in the veteran’s section, finishing 27 seconds behind a Welsh Cutter. The results are even more spectacular considering the ladies’ crew was formed last year. The Crew raised money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

A spokesperson from the club stated, “the atmosphere and support from the crowds on the sides of the river and along the bridges was fantastic. We even spotted a St Piran’s flag on a balcony of an apartment block and all burst into raptures of ‘oggy oggy oggy’ – it was quite an emotional moment.

There were times that felt very surreal – rowing a Cornish pilot gig past the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, The London Eye and then under Tower Bridge.

 LOTTERY FUNDING.

In September 2006, after months of form filling, telephone conversations and emails, Gill Gibson was contacted by Sports for All Lottery Grants, to confirm that her request for a £10,000 grant for Rame Gig Club had been granted.  The conditions of the grant was to purchase 6 Concept Rowing Machines, complete with heart monitors and training cards, as well as a new, twin axle trailer, to enable the safe transportation of one of our boats to Regattas.

The cheque came through later in the year and by the early part of 2007, the machines and trailer was on order.
          awards for all

We  took delivery of six Concept Rowing  Machines in February 2007.  Lots of strange noises could be heard by the local's in Cawsand, as their curiosity revealed a number of our rowers training on the machines while the weather was inclement, the boats were still being repaired in preparation for the season about to begin.
Training in those early days was very difficult, but rewarding as we proved that we had the strength of mind and body to improve our overall fitness.  Although some of us have been unable to maximise the use due to injuries that limit the training on such machines, others have persivered and seen an improvement in personal shape, fitness and the quality of their rowing.

As the 2007 season draws to a close and we look forward to a new season in 2008, we are also looking forwad (or is that dread) to the machines coming back out of storage and our winter training to begin

This winter, our older Junior rowers have expressed an interest and they will also begin training with the added aim of preparing themselves for the move from juniors, to mens rowers.  Ted Baker is intending to use one of the machines in a sponsored row as part of his School Community Project for his GCSE Coursework.

We now enter the next challange, that is to increase our bank balance by a mere £200,000.  We have a 3 year deadline in which to achieve this our most ambitious of challanges.  To rebuild our Gig Shed.  We have made a start and need to progress this. Further Grant applications are being submitted, one of which, we were hopeful of so long as the Olympic overspend does not claim all the funding.  Keep a look out on our Referbishment Page for ongoing updates as to how we are doing.  All donations gratefully received.
