GREAT LONDON RIVER RACE

Crews row towards Westminster Bridge during the Great River Race on the River Thames on September 13, 2008 in London, England. Olympic rowing gold medal winner Steve Williams fired the cannon to start the 21st Great River Race on the River Thames, which involved 289 boats of various types being raced from Ham in Surrey to London Docklands.

Rame Ladies entered a crew of  into this years Great London River Race. The crew consisted of... John Lentell,(coxwain) Roxy and Sam Austin, Trace Morecomb, Gill Gibson, Sam and Charlotte Ellis-Hughes and Irene Lentell.  The ages of the crew vary tremendously consisting of 2 junior rowers (13 and 15yrs) 2 young adults, 2 veterans and 2 super veterans.  The official times and placings have yet to be listed, but we believe we were the first female Cornish Pilot Gig Crew to finish with a time, yet to be confirmed of 2hrs 50min's for the 22 mile row from Ham to Greenwich.

A very well done to all the crew, but especially to Charlotte and Sam our juniors rowed an excellent race making the club very proud.

LADIES CHAMPIONSHIPS - NEWQUAY

With lashing rain and high winds the day before, it was a miracle Saturdays weather was fine enough for the championships to go ahead.  The day began fine with our ladies A going in the first heat and rowing well to finish in 2nd position, qualifying easily for the 2nd round.  The ladies B crew rowed in the 5th heat by which time the weather had taken a turn for the worst.  With our B's made up of 2 juniors and 4 veterans, they rowed a brave race in severe conditions, unfortunately failing to qualify for the 2nd round.

The weather put a stop to the day after the first round forcing the organisers to cut short the day and carrying forward the championships to the Sunday.  Our Ladies A crew rowed a valiant race, missing out on qualifying to the 3rd round by a very small margin.  However, considering the weather conditions, everyone was very pleased with the overall results for our club.

Final Results :-  Out of 83 crews

Ladies A  - 32nd  Ladies B - 58th

Well done.

31ST AUGUST

MEVAGISSEY TRUBUTE REGATTA

Despite being blessed with the beautiful sunny day for the final Tribute event for 2008, Rame had a very disappointing turnout of crews.  No men, Juniors or Vets!!

Our Ladies A & B Crews were the only ones to compete this weekend.  Our Ladies A once again rowed a race to be proud of  finishing in 15th position, bringing there season position up to a joint 11th place in the table.

Rame Ladies B, represented this year by a mixed age group of rowers from 13yrs to 55yrs showed determination throughout.  finishing in a respectable 18th place on Saturday with an overall position for the season at 17th.  These overall positions are in a field of 37 clubs.

It is very sad that such an important Regatta did not enthuse our men into attendance. Rame mens  overall season position is A = 22nd and the B = 27th

Our under 16's crew was also missing due to holiday committments and injury, bringing an end to their previous success.  However, the overall end of season position of our under 16's is 6th.  A remarkable result considering their absence today.

Come on men where have you been?At work? injured? or watching rugby!!, whether your 16 or 66, it takes 6 of you  to become a "team". It is sad to see one or two disappointed faces sat alone on the beach because they have no crew to row with!!.

SATURDAY 16TH AUGUST

EDDYSTONE CHALLENGE

A mixed crew of seven decided to take part in the challenge this year.  It has been unfortunate that each year Rame has attempted to take part, the weather, or a packed agenda of other Regattas has prevented us from doing so.   Come the big day, our crews determination, dedication (or clinical insanity!!!) to do the Eddystone Challange prevailed.  With In excess of 25 miles to row in gruelling sea and seriously bad weather conditions, the organisers rightly imposed the alternative route along the Tamar, to the mouth of the Tavy and Lyhner, this was still no easy challenge for our crew in Penlee Point.

With around 50 vessels taking part from kayaks to whalers and everthing in between, Our mixed crew rowed a valiant race finishing 2nd in the Gig section and 5th overall. Wet through, aching, with blisters and pain from areas a hardened rower does not normally get!!

Tired and miserable mixed with elation and pride added to a mixture of  comments like, "never again", and "I'll pay someone else to do it next time" still ringing in our ears, those same individuals, once dry and warm, began making arrangements for the same crew to meet up again in better climates to achieve what they all felt cheated from, that is to actually row around the Eddystone Lighthouse.  With crews from Mayflower also with this same goal in sight, a plan is being hatched to "row for fun" but with Rame collecting sponsors and hopefully encouraging a further two crews to join in rowing Minnadhu and Spirit of Rame. watch this space for further details

Warm and dry that evening the beer never tasted so good.  Well done to everyone, taking part... We did it in style..

BOOZE CRUISE - FRIDAY 8TH AUGUST

Thanks go to Mark and Jen Lentell for their constant efforts in this event.

Deer with drumRame Gig Club like to party.  Despite the dreadful weather in the week pior to this event, all those that attended were blessed with sunshine and a great time was had by all.  Unfortunately, this years cruise as been less profitable and therefore may be the last, unless there is a great demand.  Please pass all your views and request onto Mark and Jen

PARTY TIME!!

After a hard days rowing, what could be better than a good old knees up,  Rame finished their Regatta with a splendid party culminating with a Fireworks display to wow the audience.  Padstow provided a remarkable performance followed by a Disco with dancing into the early hours of Sunday Morning. All those who camped at Maker were rewarded with holiday standard weather to finish the weekend in style. Hopefully we can build on this and make next year even better.

RAME TRIBUTE - SATURDAY 26TH JULY

The sun really does shine on the righteous, with blistering sunshine and plenty of helpers, Rame hosted a Regatta that we are all proud of.  With races on time only a few hiccups, everyone enjoyed the day from rowers, organisers and spectators.

Our Ladies A crew managed to hold onto 12th position, while our Under 16s  gave the best result of the day finishing in 4th place.  A very very well done to everyone from rowers to helpers and everyone attending who assisted in making the day special.

TEIGNMOUTH - SUNDAY 20TH JULY

With the sun out and crews ready, 11 gigs attended Teignmouth for their Regatta.  Unfortunately, only our ladies A and B crews were able to attend this event, once again, due to family, work and various other unavoidable committments.

An eventful Regatta with our Gig Penlee Point taking part in most events rowed by Caradon's 2nd B crews.  Sadly, in 2 races, Penlee Point was far from the start line when the flag went down.   Firstly for Caradon's 2nd B Crew, who gave the spectator a fabulous race as they not only caught up with the race, then one by one overtook everyone going on to win the race.

Secondly, was for our ladies B crew who again were a long way off the start line when the flag went up and down in a flash, without any warning on the radio.  Once again, our crew battled on catching up with the race, overtaking one boat.  A mixed crew for Rame and Caradon was also entered into this race who had a much better start and won.  Well done to everyone.  Our ladies A race was a very close fought race with Rame finishing in 5th position, while our Ladies Vets stormed through their race finishing 2nd very close behind Teign Spirit.

It has been an odd season for Regattas, with cancelations due to bad weather, sickness and rigourous work schedules.  Dissapointment as Mevagissy Tribute was called off and Goran which is usually a great Regatta with partying on the campsite, also cancelled.  Those who braved Weymouth had a challenging weekend with battlling weather but still having a wonderful time and looking forward to next years event when hopefully more of us will make the journey.

PETE GOSS - SPIRIT OF MYSTERY

SATURDAY 21ST JUNE

With the Regatta cancelled at Mevagissy today, some of our ladies attended Caradon Gig Club for a fun day and training session while other attended the launch of Spirit of Mystery, built at Millbrook by Pete Goss for his journey to Australia.  You can see more on his website.  Our very own Spirit of Rame was sailed and rowed by some of our oldest members to pay tribute to Spirit of Mystery as she took to the water for the very first time.

FALMOUTH - SATURDAY 14TH JUNE

Held this year at Mylor Harbour, Falmouth's regatta based itself at Restronguet Sailing Club.  The first of this years Tribute events played host to over 50 Gigs with very limited space.  The weather, although cloudy, did not spoil the day.

Our crews were fired up for todays event with the Mens A going first.  Probably the best and worst race of the day, they went into the buoy in 3 position storming away, but hit tragedy loosing the rudder steering them off course and sadly into last position in their heat.  Saddened by this, but also encouraged that they have what it takes to stay up with the best of them. Well done to their Coxwain Rachel keeping the boys in the race and bringing them over the finish line safely.

Our Mens B also had a wonderful race and  finished in 16th position.

Our Ladies A had another fantastic race coming third in their heat. Equalling the men in nail biting performance hopefully pushing them up to the top heat as they finished in a well earned 11th position.  Well done ladies.  All that hard work paying dividends.  Keep it up.

Ladies B finishing in 22nd position which is also a good result as they rowed with a Junior at stroke, very well done Sam, and Birget, our novice from Austria.

Under 16's had another fabulous race.  Although they were disappointed themselves at not winning, 5th position in a field of 16 was brilliant.  They are adamant they can do better next week. We all have faith in them to succeed.

All results are very respectable with everything still to play for.  Keep up the training and lets see if we can all move up another couple of places next week.

Well done everyone.  Nice to see all crews supporting each other.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY WILL!!

Following the fantastic atmosphere at Looe Regatta, Rame crews, past and present along with friends and families met up in Cawsand to Party the evening away with Will to celebrate his 50th Birthday in style on into Sunday morning. In true Rame style, ending in an early morning naked swim!!! Fortunately!!, no one had a camera to capture the moment

LOOE - SATURDAY 7TH JUNE

Once again, the sun shone on Gig Rowing.  A glorious day bring a wonderful atmosphere for rowers and spectators at this event. Another very well run Regatta with each race following swiftly after the last.

Rame U16's reign at Looe.

Another fantastic win by our under 16's.  Well done.  100% record still.  The pressure increases as they prepare for the Tribute events.  Well done lads.  Good luck in Falmouth next week.

Further results were:-

Ladies A 11th Ladies B 7th

Mens A 7th Under 21's 7th

Vets 9th Supervets 14th

Once again, well done to everyone.

FAREWELL TO GREGOR

Gregor Zimmerman said farewell to everyone in Kingsand Cawsand and Point Europa as he returns home to Austria on Saturday 7th June.  He was joined on Friday evening in the pubs of the villages by all the friends he has made during his stay.  He will be sadly missed by all at Rame Gig Club. Hopefully he will be back!!!

CATTEWATER - SATURDAY 31ST MAY

A superb regatta was held at Mount Batten, Plymouth by Cattewater.  Despite dreadful weather, everyone getting a complete soak, no one was put off and each race was as good as the last.

Rame once again were well represented at this event, with crews rowing in all sections.  We must thank Jupiter point for the loan of their Gig, which enabled us to row an additional crew in the Ladies B race and our Supervets raced in Jupiter in the Veterans Race.

Malcolm had a real challange on his hands while coxing the Mens B, part way round the course tragedy struck and the yolk broke!!! he continued the race achieving fantastic placing considering no yolk steering the ropes regardless.  Fantastic job Malcolm.  Well done.  A well earned 5th place.

Once again our children steel the show.  With their 100% record at stake, they managed to uphold this with ease rowing across the finish line in style.  Long may their success continue.  Well done.

Additional results were:

Ladies A 6th, Ladies B 5th, Ladies C 7th

Mens A 4th, Mens B 5th

Veterans 6th, Supervets 9th

ROSELAND - (ST MAWES) - SATURDAY 24 MAY

Another great Regatta, where the weather behaved despite a dreadful forecast.  With 25 clubs taking part, the races went off in 2 heats although these were not timed so actual placings not as acurate as some would like to see. Some of the lead boats in the 2nd heat were almost catching some in the 1st heat. A timed race could have made a big difference to the overall results.

With no Junior, Mens B or Veterans crews, we were a little light on rowers. The best result of the day was from our mixed crew who achieved 5th position.

Further results were:-

Ladies A 12th, Ladies B 20th, Mens A 15th.

CHARLESTOWN  -

SATURDAY 17TH MAY

Today was another example of how God loves Gig Rowing.!!! Despite the forcast for dreadful weather, and lashing rain both before and after Charlestown Regatta, the event itself remained free from major down pours. Almost right on cue, as the Gigs were leaving and most of us were safely in our cars on the way home, the heavens opened. Lets hope for similar good fortune for the rest of the season

Rame rowers had a mixed bag of results today.  Everyone having had a superb time, but the stars of the day go once again to our under 16's crew.  They won their race outstandingly giving them 100% success rate for the season so far.  Well done to you all.

The rest of the crews also rowed well and results were that to be proud of. However, the talk of the day was that of our prize tosser!! Not the usual title to be proud of except for those of you from the gig world who know that tossing is an almost forgotten tradition of Gig Rowing, a talent mastered by few and even fewer who feel confident enough to use the technique in the middle of a race!!  Rame's very own John Lentel gave the announcer something to talk about when he produced his tossing talent gaining valuable distance in the men's B crew race.  They finished in 6th place.  Also finishing 6th was our Ladies A crew, with the Men's A crew finishing 9th and the Ladies B crew finishing 11th.  Last race of the day was the mixed with A and B crew rowers, supervet and a Junior, Rame, in  Penlee Point did superb finishing in 3rd position.

Well done once again to everyone.

SCILLIES 2008 - WORLD PILOT GIG CHAMPIONSHIPS

2008 has seen a fabulous championships with 111 Gigs in the mens race and 106 in the ladies.  The weather complimented the event along with great organisation and time keeping from the hosts and everyone who took part.  It has become apparent to most of us rowers that the sport has taken a huge jump in standards over the last year.  Most crews have shown an improvement with clubs who have achieved little in the past training like demons to prove themselves every inch the athlete.  It is great to see a new set of names on the trophies.  Having said that I am sure eveyone will join me in saying that had it not been for the domination of the Championships over the last 12 years from Caradon, this sport would not have driven forward.  They alone have forced us all to up our game in an attempt to beat them, and some have now managed to do exacly that.  No doubt the gauntled is down, so watch out, "they'll be back".

Our shining stars this year are the Ladies A crew racing in Minnadhu.  They have trained relentlessly this year with an aim to beat their wonderful position achieved in 2007.  They succeeded by moving up 11 places from 26th place in 2007 to 15th in 2008.  With 2 veteran's in the crew, this proves that age does not matter in this sport.  Only a determination and solid committment.  Looking forward to next  year already to see how much further they can go.

Our ladies B crew rowing in Penlee Point had their own gold star success in recruiting a further two rowers and giving Birgit, our Austrian novice rower the experience of her life which she does not want to end... Lauren, another of our novice is fired up  to row her way into the future and wants to taste success.  We all believe she has what it takes to get there.

Some rowers this year have been dissappointed with their performance, however, it has become obvious that from the top 20 to the bottom couple, this year there was only a minute or so difference in time.  Proving that we have all worked incredibly hard regardless of our final position. Most Gigs had a battle right to the end with one Gig or another.  Our supervets rowed a valiant race.  They were dissapointed with their final position, but the rest of the club congratulate them.  Not many crews competing were supervets,  many of our men never having rowed in the Scillies before and still relatively novice to racing.  We hope they will take this experience as a positive and continue to compete throughout the year and join us for the Championships 2009. Our vets crews remain strong, finishing mid field, especially as this section of the championships is the fastest growing.  The vets race has more than doubled in size in the last couple of years.  The men finished in 28th position, with our ladies finishing 22nd.

Our men's A crew's did not show quite the same level of training this year with a mix of interuptions like work committments (how dare work get in the way of play) Our men's A crew still did us proud  achieving 34th position overall. They used this Championships to give Ted Baker his first major championship experience having just moved up from the juniors.  He rowed at stroke doing a  great job. All the men and the club are very proud of him.  Our Mens B's also used this event to bring on several novice rowers.  Luke returning to the club having rowed with the Juniors a few years ago, Gregor from Austria and Mateus from France both very new to the sport all fully embraced the club and the whole scillies experience. Rowing in Penlee Point our B's improved from last years 75th position to this years 56th.

Birget, Mateus and Gregor became ambassadors for the club as well as for Point Europa when they attracted the attention of BBC Radio Cornwall.  They were interviewed along with Gill Gibson, the Club's Vice Chair, on Saturday 3rd May.  A little bit of advertising and awareness for Kingsand, Cawsand and Rame Gig Club.

We must not forget our supporters who were there this year watching every race, taking photo's and cheering us on all the way.  Giving encouragment, sympathy and praise, while helping others come to terms with unfortunate injuries.

Karen and Mike Austin are always there to help at every occasion. We believe Karen wins the competition for the most burnt club member, although very closely followed by everyone else......Mike needs to be checked out for webbed feet!!

Well done to everyone.

SATURDAY 19TH APRIL

Rame members enjoyed a fabulous evening at the Cawand Bay Hotel meeting up with wellwishers and rowers, spectators and families for the Pre Scillies Bangers and Mash evening.  The food was spectacular as was the company.  Thanks again to everyone who attended in making this a night to remember.  With less than a week before we depart, I am sure everyone wishes all the rowers the very best of luck.

SUNDAY 6TH APRIL - TRAINING!!

Despite attending and racing in the Dartmouth Regatta, some of our ladies felt they still had a long way to go in training prior to the rapidly approaching World Championships.  6 ladies agreed to meet the following morning.  It seemed like a good idea at the time, until they each woke up and realised the weather was cold, windy and...!!! what is that stuff falling from the sky!!? Cornwall is not used to seeing the cold white stuff, but here it is falling heavy.  Regardless of the weather, our 6 ladies braved the elements and continued with their hour long training session.  Unfortunately, every time the camera came out to gather the evidence (of the snow, not the training) it stopped snowing.  Our men veterans and supervets also braved the snowy morning to continue with their schedule of training.

DARTMOUTH

It was a beautiful day for a Regatta. The sun was out although it was cold. It soon warmed up for those of us who were racing.  As the ladies B's hit the water, the wind started to pick up making it a difficult row for our two novices.  It was Biggies first ever race.  As the day went on the wind became worse and our Ladies A crew had a difficult task ahead of them.  They proved that all their hard work and committed training programme had paid off as they rowed into 4th position.  Success followed as our children rowed a fantastic race proudly winning their first for the season.  Our Ladies Veterans had a hard act to follow and they too proved that all their hard work has paid off bringing them in at a respectable 4th place.  Our last race for the day was a mixed C race, with one veteran and two juniors, we rowed another fabulous race winning with some degree of ease.  Well done to everyone who took part.  Not long to  the Scillies, hopefully we can build on todays results over the next three weeks.
